Pet healthcare services such as pharmacy and veterinary clinics and their high margins are an essential part of the growth strategies at Chewy and Petco. “A puppy that was, you know, adopted or bought, during 2020 is now three years old. As they get older, they’re only going to require more health care,” said Anna Andreeva, a senior equity research analyst and managing director at Needham and Company. “And I think both companies are being smart in developing those verticals.”

The union representing Starbucks’ baristas in the Pacific Northwest met with the company’s lawyers to share their wishlist for a labor contract. Starbucks Workers United is seeking a starting wage of $20 an hour and credit card tipping at all stores. It also wants a 37-hour work week guaranteed for full-timers and 100 percent employer-covered health insurance. Starbucks’ lawyers left after nearly four hours of meeting with the union.

New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan underwent 40 hours of barista training when he joined the company in October. He plans to put that training to practical use. “To keep us close to the culture and our customers, as well as to our challenges and opportunities, I intend to continue working in stores for a half day each month, and I expect each member of the leadership team to also ensure our support centers stay connected and engaged in the realities of our stores for discussion and improvement,” he wrote in a letter to employees.
